History It took 21 years of hard labor, hurricanes and yellow fever epidemics – from 1854 to 1866 – for the trapezoid-shaped Ford Zachary Taylor on Key West to be built. During the Civil War, the Union controlled the fort on the island with strong local support. Fort Taylor was the home base for a successful blockade of Confederate ships, and some historians say the blockade cut a year off the War between the States. Two more Key West forts, the East and West Martello Towers, were authorized by Congress in 1844 to protect Fort Taylor from enemy attack, but neither was ever completed.

Sentenced to life imprisonment, Mudd was pardoned in 1869 for helping to fight the 1867 yellow fever epidemic that struck the fort, felling 270 of the 300-man garrison and resulting in 38 fatalities. The cell occupied by Dr. Mudd during his years of confinement can still be seen at the fort today. n Wrecking & Sponging The absence of lighthouses and reliable charts made early ocean travel hazardous in the shallow waters surrounding the Florida Keys. During storms many ships crashed on the reefs and became prey to wreckers, who often killed all aboard for the possibility of treasure.
