Hunting is not golf with guns. There is seriousness about it and a depth to it that other pursuits do not provide. The evolution of the behavior of humans has produced a capability of hunting and killing, in at least some of us that our cultural evolution has not completely ablated. We are not very far removed from our hunter-gatherer origins, and hundreds of thousands of years have produced behavior and emotions within us that allowed us to be successful as hunters. The time since the Neolithic revolution is short, a pretty small number of grains of sand in the hourglass of time that humans have been around.
For me, cooking and eating wild ducks is not an excuse for shooting them, I actually like it. There is also the “trophy” aspect of having a drake canvasback or goldeneye or mallard in hand. And I have mounted ducks to remind me of their beauty. But those explanations do not account for the major and unbroken role that hunting has played in my life even as I progressed through college, professional school, got married (to a non-hunter), had children, tried to make ends meet, and start a career that would make me a living.
Another rivulet that contributed to forming this journey was the appearance of rifle hunting in my life. As I progressed through middle age, I continued bird hunting on the prairie. My son and our good friends, a boyhood hunting companion of mine and his son, made a constant of our trips to the prairie, now not just in search of ducks but also geese, partridge, pheasants, sharp-tail grouse and Sandhill cranes. The day came when I began to realize that as the sociology of hunting continued to change, I needed to have some land of my own so, if worst came to worst, I could stand there with a gun in my hand and not be arrested.
